To ensure accurate results, proper testing technique is critical. The spirometers are responsive to any type of airflow moving through the turbine so it’s critical that no flow be detected prior to the effort. We suggest the patient place the device next to or near their mouth so that when the test begins the movement of the spirometer does not trigger the start of the effort. The motion of the spirometer being lifted toward the mouth can cause the device to switch modes. It’s important not to breathe out into the device at the start of the test as any type of exhale prior to the initial inhale can cause the same response from the spirometer. Keeping the device as still as possible and inhaling and exhaling with proper timing will facilitate the accuracy and consistency of test results.
